Description

A World Map showing the legalization of Homosexuality over time by country until 2012.

-The first country in modern history to legalize Homosexual relations was the Principality of Andorra in 1790.

-The most recent country to legalize Homosexuality was the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe in 2011.

-Prior to 1872 Homosexuality was never illegal in Japan, however it would be illegal for a little under a decade before being re-legalized in 1880.

-Homosexuality was legalized by the Ottoman Empire, of which Turkey is the successor state to, in 1858 making it the first Muslim country to do so, and meaning that for nearly half a century homosexuality was legal in the majority of the Middle-East.

NOTES:

1. The map shows countries by when homosexuality became legal nationwide, not when an administrative division legalized it, so for instance while many states had legalized it by then, it was not until 2003 following the Supreme Court ruling that such laws, then in effect in 13 states, most notably Texas, were unconstitutional that it was legalized in the entirety of the country, likewise while England & Wales legalized it in 1967, it would not be until 1981 and 1982 that Scotland and N. Ireland would legalize it, thus making it legal in all of the United Kingdom.

2. All of the countries in which Homosexuality has never been illegal gained their independence from 1950 onwards, however some of them, notably the Indochinese states, had themselves never made it illegal prior to annexation/colonization by the European empires.

3. The only countries in which information is not available are the mostly unrecognized break-away republics of Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh and South Ossetia.

A few more countries have legalized homosexuality since this map was made. India legalized homosexuality in 2018, Angola and Botswana in 2019, Gabon in 2020, Bhutan in 2021, and Barbados, Singapore, Antigua, and St. Kitts in 2022. The Cook Islands are in the process of legalizing it right now.

Sadly, Chad criminalized homosexuality a few years ago.
