Monarchy and Republic Types, 2014 by Iori-Komei Monarchy and Republic Types, 2014 by Iori-Komei
The above is a map showing the types of Republics and Monarchies in the world (as well as some additional things) by country and autonomous territory (IE Iraqi Kurdistan, Hong Kong and Macau).

Wouldn't North Korea double as an (rather screwed-up) absolute monarchy as well?

Also, out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on monarchy in general?

It's a bit hard to see, but North Korea is in fact shown as that, it's striped as Absolute Monarchy, Military Junta and Partocratic.

As to Monarchy, well so long as it's a Constitutional Monarchy with a democratic government I'm neutral generally, though there are a few cases where I support the countries becoming Republics (Thailand and Australia mostly) and others where I support the specific monarchy (the Japanese Emperor and Queen Elizabeth mostly).

Personally, I'm fine with either Republics and Monarchies so long as they are well-run, democratic and generally pleasant. After all, there've been nasty Ancien Regime royalist polities just as well as dictatorial republics.

What about a benevolent dictatorship where supreme authority is derived from a single person, but said person acts for the actual (and noticeable) betterment of their respective electorate rather than personal betterment?

That would be what's called a Benevolent Dictatorship.

I did refer to it as a benevolent dictatorship at the start.

Ah yes. That's the rub, isn't it?

I assume the alternating colours for Russia are based on the Putin factor?

Pretty much, yes; when Putin is President it's a Presidential Republic, when he's Prime Minister it's a Semi-Presidential Republic, though he is oddly more politically weaker when PM then I'd have thought.
